A symptom is not a diagnosis

Nobody calls because a capacitor is weak. They call because the house is warm, or the air handler keeps shutting itself off, or the power bill jumped and nothing else about the house changed. Each of those can come from half a dozen different causes, and the only honest way to close that gap is to go measure.

What each symptom usually points at

These four account for most of what comes in from St. Lucie County. None of them is a diagnosis on its own, but each one narrows the search before the truck leaves.

  1. No cool at all

    Nothing cold coming out anywhere. Usually electrical: a control, a contactor, a capacitor, or a safety that opened. Sometimes a refrigerant loss that has been creeping for a year.

  2. Cools, but the house stays damp

    The thermostat is satisfied and the air still feels heavy. That is a runtime and sizing question more than a broken part, covered further down this page.

  3. Runs constantly, never gets there

    Capacity is going somewhere. Restricted airflow, a loaded coil, leaking duct in a hot attic, or a charge problem. Measurement separates them quickly.

  4. Shuts off, restarts later on its own

    Most often water: a clogged drain line backing up into a float switch. Heat-sensitive electrical parts behave the same way on the hottest afternoons.

On the visit

Four families of readings

Put plainly, four things get measured, and they get measured while the system runs the way it runs for you. Temperatures, across the coil and in the rooms that complain. Pressures, on both sides of the refrigerant circuit. Airflow, meaning static pressure and what the ducts actually deliver. And electrical, meaning what each motor and control draws under real load.

The numbers are not the show. We do not read them out like a scoreboard. They are simply the point where two causes that looked identical stop looking alike.

The drain line and the float switch

In air this humid the coil sheds water all day, and that water leaves through a small line that is easy to slime shut. When it backs up, a float switch cuts the system off on purpose. What the homeowner sees is a dead system that mysteriously runs again by evening. That accounts for a large share of the shuts-itself-off calls here, and it is rarely a big repair.

Before the truck arrives

Note when the symptom shows up: time of day, weather, which rooms. Check the filter and the breaker. A phone video of it misbehaving saves an hour of hunting.

The one nobody expects

This is the finding people argue with. Everything works. Nothing is broken. The house is clammy anyway. What is usually happening is that the system has more capacity than the house needs, so it satisfies the thermostat in short bursts and never runs long enough to pull much water out of the air. Nine humid months a year make that obvious here in a way it never would be up north.

The fixes live in runtime rather than parts: fan settings, a humidity-aware thermostat, return and duct corrections, and at replacement time, sizing for the actual load instead of the old nameplate. The newer construction out toward Tradition and the 1980s and 1990s grid closer to the river both produce this call, for different reasons.

Asking for a second opinion

If somebody has recommended a full replacement, another set of eyes on it is reasonable and nobody worth hiring gets offended. Ask what was measured rather than observed, and ask for the readings behind the recommendation. A finding that can be explained holds up.
